School Closure
This applies to:
Modification date
This policy is under review
Emergency school closures may occur when unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather, broken water pipes, flooding, or power outages—require the school to close outside normal school hours. These decisions are made collaboratively by school administrators, the superintendent, and the installation commander.
Notification of Closures
School closure announcements will be communicated through The DoDEA Messaging System (DMS)
The DoDEA Messaging System (DMS) allows each school to send automated phone messages to all parents and staff.
Situations During School Hours that require early dismissal
In some cases, school may need to close after the school day has begun. Once a decision is made by the same leadership team, staff will notify all classrooms.
- Bus riders will be dismissed at a designated time to board buses.
- Walkers, bike riders, and students being picked up may leave only after their parent/guardian has been contacted and has agreed to the process.
- If a parent/guardian cannot be reached before teacher release time, the student will be brought to the office, where staff will continue attempts to make contact.
Students are NOT permitted to leave school grounds without parent/guardian notification.
To support timely outreach, families must keep all contact numbers current with both the child’s teacher and the school office.
Situations Before the School Day Begins
If the situation, such as serve weather, requires a delayed opening or full-day cancellation, parents will be notified through DMS.
