Parker Elementary School supports animal shelters on 100th day of school
Students at Ellis D. Parker Elementary School collected donations for three local animal shelters during the school’s 100th day celebration, turning a math lesson into an act of community service.
Members of the Ambassador and Beta clubs organized the drive with help from parents, students and faculty. The annual event, which began in 2006, blends curriculum subjects while giving back to the surrounding area.
Teachers used the donations to reinforce College and Career Ready Standards in early numeracy. As students counted items by ones and tens, they practiced the concepts that each number represents one more and each group of ten represents ten more.
The project also supports DoWEA’s priorities of civics, patriotism and classical learning. By connecting number sense to real-world service, the young Patriots at Parker Elementary build both academic foundations and a sense of civic duty.
