In a year marked by rapid changes, DoDEA is doubling down on professional development to ensure every student thrives, drawing on a fresh strategic roadmap designed to elevate learning worldwide.

Director Beth Schiavino-Narvaez unveiled our new Blueprint for Continuous Improvement in July. The five-year plan, spanning 2025 to 2030, outlines four key goals: student excellence, school excellence, talent excellence, and organizational excellence. At its core, the blueprint emphasizes job-embedded professional learning, data-driven decisions, and instructional leadership to foster adaptable, resilient students in a fast-evolving world.

Central to this vision are Continuous School Improvement days, or CSI days, which provide dedicated time for educators to collaborate, analyze data, and refine teaching strategies. These sessions directly support the blueprint's push for differentiated professional learning—tailored on-the-job training that ensures high-quality instruction in every classroom—and instructional leadership, allowing principals and teams to focus on teaching rather than administrative tasks. By aligning school activities with systemwide goals, CSI days help bridge gaps in student achievement, promote teacher growth, and build a culture of ongoing improvement, ultimately preparing military-connected kids for college, careers, and life.

This fall, two districts in DoDEA's Americas region showcased how CSI days bring the blueprint to life, igniting educators' commitment and paving the way for stronger student outcomes.

In the Mid-Atlantic District, every educator, from pre-kindergarten teachers to district administrators, participated in a unified CSI day themed "Raising the Bar – Intentionally Planning to Close the Gap." District Superintendent Ryan Smith kicked off the event by invoking the precision of the Blue Angels flight team and a personal anecdote about his son, Logan, to underscore the role of mindset, collaboration, and high expectations in driving success.

Teams dove into data from sources like the Cognia Accreditation Report and school improvement plans, identifying actionable steps to enhance teaching and boost student agency—empowering kids to own their learning, set goals, and reflect on progress. As Amy Milano-Smith, an educator at West Point Elementary, put it: “Continuous improvement starts with honest reflection. Data helps us see what's working, what's not, and what's next.”

The day's structure, praised for its intentional design and shared leadership, mirrored the blueprint's emphasis on professional growth. Principals and school-based teams led sessions, ensuring insights translate quickly into daily practice. Pam Granger, CSI chair at West Point Middle School, highlighted the event's execution: “The training materials, time allocation, and facilitation of activities created numerous opportunities for meaningful discourse, directly aligned with the purpose of learning.”

Meanwhile, in the Southeast District, Parker Elementary School hosted an engaging CSI day, transforming the event into a "Collaboration Café" complete with coffee stations and cozy decor to foster a spirit of innovation and teamwork.

The day started with a fun activity in which staff revisited the district's vision, mission, and values, reflecting on how their work aligns with broader goals. Morning discussions in small groups, dubbed "Espresso Your Thoughts," explored support for student achievement, staff development, and parent engagement.

Afternoon sessions shifted to "Brew & Review," where teachers analyzed metrics from school improvement plans, and "Steeping in Strategies," focusing on student goal setting, conferences, and differentiated instruction—tailoring lessons to meet various needs. Faculty identified growth areas like technology integration, behavior supports, and digital resources to guide future efforts.

These CSI days exemplify DoDEA's blueprint in action, turning strategic goals into tangible progress. By prioritizing reflection, data analysis, and collaborative planning, they equip educators to address learning gaps, enhance student ownership, and create supportive environments—all while adapting to the unique challenges of military life.

As DoDEA presses forward, such initiatives signal a broader commitment: In a dynamic world, continuous improvement isn't just a plan—it's the path to excellence for every student, every day.
